Jeremiah warns Zedekiah that he will be captured but will die in peace. The people had covenanted to free their Hebrew slaves during the siege, but when Babylon temporarily withdrew, they took them back, breaking faith with God, who therefore proclaims a bitter “liberty” for them — to sword, pestilence, and famine.
