Jeremiah writes a letter to the exiles in Babylon, counseling them to build houses, plant gardens, marry, and “seek the welfare of the city” where they are, for their exile will last seventy years. Then comes one of the book’s most cherished promises: “For I know the plans I have for you... plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope,” when they will seek and find Him.
