Chapter 1

Trials, Wisdom, and Doing the Word

Count trials as joy because they produce steadfastness, ask God for wisdom in faith, and be “doers of the word, and not hearers only,” showing that pure religion cares for the needy and keeps itself unstained by the world.

Faith and Works

Show no partiality between rich and poor, fulfill the “royal law” of love, and understand that a faith without works is dead, as Abraham and Rahab show a faith proven by action.

Chapter 3

Taming the Tongue and True Wisdom

The tongue, though small, is a restless fire that can defile the whole life; the wisdom from above is peaceable, gentle, and full of good fruits, unlike the bitter, earthly wisdom that breeds disorder.

Chapters 4–5

Humility, Patience, and Prayer

Turn from the quarrels, worldliness, and pride that come from the passions, humble yourselves before God, do not boast about tomorrow, hear a warning to the oppressive rich, and be patient and prayerful until the Lord’s coming.

  • Chapter 5 (c. AD 47): A warning to the rich, and a call to patience, prayer, and restoring the wandering.
