When Syria and Israel threaten to depose King Ahaz, the LORD sends Isaiah to urge trust, promising the enemy coalition will fail. Ahaz refuses to ask for a sign, so the LORD gives one anyway: “the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” — God with us — even as He warns that Assyria, whom Ahaz trusts, will devastate the land.
