The prayer continues with the yearning cry, “Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down,” longing for God to act as in the awesome days of old. Confessing that “we have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment,” the people appeal to God as Father and Potter — “we are the clay, and you are our potter” — and beg Him not to remember their sins forever.
