The chapter opens with a startling image of the LORD coming from Edom with garments stained red, having trodden the winepress of judgment alone in the day of vengeance and redemption. It then turns to a moving prayer that recalls God’s steadfast love and past mercies to Israel, when He was afflicted in their afflictions and carried them of old, and pleads for Him to look down again.
