The historical narrative arrives at 701 BC, when Sennacherib of Assyria captures Judah’s fortified cities and sends his commander to Jerusalem. Before the walls the Rabshakeh mocks Hezekiah’s trust in Egypt and in the LORD, boasting that no god has delivered any nation from Assyria’s hand, and urges the people to surrender.
