God enters into “a controversy with the inhabitants of the land,” for “there is no faithfulness or steadfast love, and no knowledge of God in the land,” but only swearing, lying, murder, and adultery. He indicts the priests especially: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge,” for they have rejected God’s law and led the people into idolatry.
