On the very day the Babylonian siege begins, God gives the allegory of a rusted, bloodstained pot set to boil, picturing Jerusalem purged by fire. Then God takes Ezekiel’s beloved wife, “the delight of your eyes,” and forbids him to mourn, as a sign that the exiles will be too stunned to mourn when the temple, their pride, falls.
