Geographic Context

Esther unfolds entirely within the Persian Empire, far from the land of Judah, among the Jews of the diaspora. Its stage is the citadel of Susa, one of the four royal capitals of Persia, in the empire’s eastern heartland (in modern southwestern Iran). From this center of imperial power the story reaches out across the whole realm, described as stretching “from India to Ethiopia, over 127 provinces” — the vast domain over which the king’s decrees, whether of destruction or deliverance, are carried by royal couriers.

The book’s geography underscores its theme: the people of God are scattered thin across a pagan empire, seemingly at the mercy of foreign rulers and shifting decrees, with no temple, no homeland, and no visible protection. Yet even in Susa, at the heart of Gentile power and far from Jerusalem, the God of Israel guards His own.
