A three-year famine is revealed to be judgment for Saul’s slaughter of the Gibeonites, in breach of Israel’s oath; to atone, seven of Saul’s descendants are handed over and executed, and their bodies are finally buried with Saul and Jonathan. The chapter also recounts fresh battles with the Philistines, in which David’s mighty men strike down four giants of Gath.
