2 Samuel 14

c. 987 BCJoab contrives Absalom’s return, but David keeps him at a distance for two years.

Joab, seeing David’s longing for the banished Absalom, sends a wise woman with a staged plea that moves the king to allow Absalom’s return. Yet David refuses to see him, keeping him at arm’s length for two years, until Absalom forces the issue by setting Joab’s field on fire, and father and estranged son are outwardly reconciled with a kiss.
