At Elisha’s direction a prophet secretly anoints the army commander Jehu as king to destroy the house of Ahab. Jehu races to Jezreel, shoots King Joram of Israel dead in Naboth’s field, and kills the visiting King Ahaziah of Judah as well. Then he orders Jezebel thrown from her window, and she is trampled by horses and devoured by dogs, fulfilling Elijah’s prophecy to the letter.
