Naaman, the great Syrian commander, is a leper, and on the word of a captive Israelite girl he comes to Elisha, who tells him to wash seven times in the Jordan. Offended at first by so humble a cure, Naaman relents, is healed, and confesses that “there is no God in all the earth but in Israel.” When Elisha’s servant Gehazi chases after Naaman for gifts and lies about it, Naaman’s leprosy clings to him instead.
