Ahaz of Judah is a thoroughly wicked king who even sacrifices his son in the fire and worships on the high places. Threatened by Israel and Aram, he strips the temple to bribe Assyria for help, becoming its vassal. Visiting Damascus, he is so taken with a pagan altar that he has a copy built and installed in the LORD’s temple, corrupting its worship.
