Paul tells of being caught up to the third heaven and hearing things too holy to utter, but refuses to boast of such visions. Instead he speaks of “a thorn... in the flesh, a messenger of Satan,” given to keep him humble, which he pleaded three times to have removed. The Lord answered, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” So Paul boasts gladly in his weaknesses, “for when I am weak, then I am strong.” He expresses his fatherly concern for the church and his readiness to spend and be spent for their souls.
