War breaks out with the Philistines, and after a defeat Israel superstitiously carries the ark into battle as a talisman. The Philistines rout them, slaughter thirty thousand, and capture the ark; Hophni and Phinehas die that day. When Eli hears, he falls and breaks his neck, and the wife of Phinehas, dying in childbirth, names her son Ichabod — “the glory has departed from Israel.”
