On Mount Gilboa the battle goes against Israel. The Philistines kill Saul’s sons, including Jonathan, and Saul, badly wounded by archers and refusing to be taken alive, falls on his own sword. The Philistines behead him, fasten his body to the wall of Beth-shan, and display his armor in their temple; but the valiant men of Jabesh-gilead, remembering his rescue, recover the bodies and bury them with honor.
