1 Samuel study chapter

1 Samuel 15

c. 1030 BCSaul spares Agag and the best spoil, and the LORD rejects him as king: “to obey is better than sacrifice.”

The LORD commands Saul to devote the Amalekites and all their possessions to destruction as judgment for their ancient attack on Israel. Saul defeats them but spares King Agag and the best of the livestock, then claims he obeyed. Samuel confronts him — “to obey is better than sacrifice” — and announces that the LORD has rejected him as king; Samuel executes Agag and grieves over Saul, and the LORD regrets making him king.
