Chapter 1

A Living Hope

Born again to a living hope through Christ’s resurrection and an imperishable inheritance, believers rejoice even amid trials that test their faith, and are called to be holy, ransomed by the precious blood of Christ.

  • Chapter 1 (c. AD 63): Born again to a living hope and an imperishable inheritance, rejoice amid trials, and be holy as God is holy.

Chapters 2–3

Living as God’s People

As a chosen people and living stones built on Christ, believers are called to honorable conduct, to submit within the structures of society, to do good, and to follow Christ’s example in suffering for righteousness without retaliation.

  • Chapter 2 (c. AD 63): As living stones and a chosen people, live honorably, submit to authorities, and follow Christ, who bore our sins.
  • Chapter 3 (c. AD 63): Submission and gentleness in relationships and society, and readiness to suffer for righteousness with a good conscience.

Chapters 4–5

Suffering and Shepherding

Living for the will of God amid “fiery trials,” believers are to love, serve, and not be surprised by suffering; Peter then charges the elders to shepherd the flock, and all to be humble, watchful, and firm in the faith.

  • Chapter 4 (c. AD 63): Live for the will of God, serve one another, and do not be surprised at the fiery trial, but rejoice to share Christ’s sufferings.
  • Chapter 5 (c. AD 63): Elders are to shepherd the flock; all are to be humble, watchful, and firm, entrusting themselves to the God of all grace.
