Threatened by Jezebel, Elijah collapses in fear and despair, fleeing to the wilderness and asking to die. God tenderly feeds him and leads him to Horeb, where He passes by not in wind, earthquake, or fire, but in “a low whisper.” The LORD corrects Elijah’s belief that he alone is left, reveals seven thousand who have not bowed to Baal, and recommissions him, sending him to anoint Hazael, Jehu, and his successor Elisha.
