After three years, Elijah confronts Ahab and summons Israel to Mount Carmel to end their limping “between two opinions.” In a decisive contest, the prophets of Baal cry and cut themselves in vain, while Elijah repairs the LORD’s altar, drenches it with water, and prays; fire falls from heaven and consumes everything, and the people cry, “The LORD, he is God.” The Baal prophets are executed, and Elijah prays until a small cloud brings the drought-ending rain.
