1 Kings 1

c. 971 BCAs David lies dying, Adonijah tries to seize the throne, but Nathan and Bathsheba secure the crown for Solomon.

As the aged David nears death, his son Adonijah exalts himself, gathering support and declaring himself king. The prophet Nathan and Bathsheba act quickly, reminding David of his oath that Solomon would reign; David orders Solomon anointed king at Gihon, and the city erupts in celebration. Adonijah’s followers scatter in fear, and he flees to the altar for mercy, which Solomon grants on condition of good behavior.
