Paul is appalled that the church tolerates a man living in sexual sin so gross that even pagans condemn it, and that they are proud rather than grieved. He commands them to “purge the evil person from among you,” delivering him to Satan for discipline so that his spirit may be saved. “Cleanse out the old leaven,” he urges, “for Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.” Believers are not to keep company with those who claim to be Christians yet live in flagrant, unrepentant sin.
