Geographic Context

First Chronicles centers on Jerusalem, the city David captured and made the political and spiritual heart of Israel by bringing the ark there. The genealogies survey the tribal territories of the whole land — Judah and Simeon in the south, Levi’s cities scattered throughout, the eastern tribes across the Jordan, and the northern tribes — mapping the people of God across the land of promise before and after the exile.

David’s wars extend Israel’s reach against the Philistines to the west, Moab and Ammon to the east, the Aramean kingdoms toward Damascus in the north, and Edom to the south. But the geographic focal point of the book is a single spot: the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite on the hill north of the City of David, which David purchases and where he builds an altar — the very site chosen for Solomon’s temple, the place where heaven and earth would meet in worship.

Timeline of Major Events

• From Adam onward - The genealogies trace the line of promise from creation through the patriarchs and tribes.
• c. 1010 BC - The death of Saul at Gilboa, ending his unfaithful reign.
• c. 1003 BC - David is made king over all Israel and captures Jerusalem; the ark is brought up.
• c. 1000 BC - The Davidic Covenant given through Nathan; David’s wars extend the kingdom.
• c. 975 BC - The census and plague; David buys Ornan’s threshing floor, the future temple site.
• c. 971 BC - David prepares materials, organizes the Levites and priests, and charges Solomon; David dies.
