Zechariah develops returning to God, His jealousy for Zion, the Branch, the Spirit, and the pierced Shepherd.

1. Return to the LORD

Zechariah opens with the summons, “Return to me... and I will return to you.” The whole book is an appeal to wholehearted repentance and renewed covenant faithfulness, grounded in God’s steadfast desire to dwell with His people.

2. God’s Jealous Love for Zion

God declares Himself “exceedingly jealous for Zion.” He is fiercely committed to His people, angry at the nations that harmed them, and determined to comfort, restore, and dwell in the midst of Jerusalem.

3. The Coming Branch: Priest and King

Zechariah’s central hope is “the Branch,” the Messiah who unites the offices of priest and king, who removes the land’s sin “in a single day,” and who builds the true temple of the LORD.

4. Salvation by God’s Spirit, Not Human Might

“Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.” God’s work is accomplished not by human strength but by His Spirit, a truth that steadies the weak remnant and marks the advance of Christ’s kingdom.

5. The Pierced Shepherd and the Fountain for Sin

Zechariah foresees the Shepherd rejected, betrayed, pierced, and struck, yet through whom God opens “a fountain... to cleanse from sin” — a stunning preview of the cross and the salvation it accomplishes.

6. The LORD King Over All the Earth

The book climaxes with the day of the LORD, when God comes to defeat the nations, dwell with His people, and reign as “king over all the earth,” so that “the LORD will be one and his name one” — the consummation of His kingdom in Christ.
