The second oracle turns to Jerusalem’s future deliverance. God will make Jerusalem “a cup of staggering” and “a heavy stone” for all the surrounding peoples, so that all who try to lift it are hurt; He will defend the city and destroy the nations that come against it. Then comes a turning of hearts: “I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child.” A deep, national mourning of repentance follows, family by family.
