Has God rejected His people? “By no means!” There is a remnant chosen by grace, and Israel’s stumbling has brought salvation to the Gentiles, who like wild branches have been grafted into the olive tree — and who must not be arrogant, but stand by faith. Paul foresees that God will yet show mercy, so that “all Israel will be saved,” for “the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” Overwhelmed, he bursts into praise: “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! ... For from him and through him and to him are all things.”
