The Setting of Proverbs

Proverbs, like the other wisdom books, has little geography; its setting is the household, the city gate, the field, and the marketplace of ordinary Israelite life, and above all the relationship between a teacher and a pupil, a father and a son. Its imagery is drawn from that world — the ant and the sluggard’s field, the merchant’s scales, the banquet table, the streets where Wisdom and Folly both call out, and the well-run home of the excellent wife. The wisdom it teaches is meant to be lived in these everyday places, under the eye of the LORD who is “in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.”

Behind the book stands the royal court of Jerusalem, where Solomon and later sages cultivated and collected wisdom, and where, generations later, the scribes of King Hezekiah copied out further proverbs. The book thus reflects Israel’s wisdom tradition at its best, distinct from the surrounding nations by its grounding in the fear of the LORD.

Timeline of Composition

• c. 970-930 BC - Solomon speaks and writes the bulk of the proverbs during his reign (1 Kings 4:32).
• The monarchy - “The words of the wise” and other collections are gathered.
• c. 715-686 BC - “The men of Hezekiah” copy out a further collection of Solomon’s proverbs (chapters 25-29).
• The words of Agur and King Lemuel - Added from other sages (chapters 30-31), of uncertain date.
• After the monarchy - The collections are compiled into the finished book of Proverbs.
