Obadiah develops the judgment of pride, God’s defense of His people, retribution, and His kingdom.

1. The Judgment of Pride

Edom trusted in its mountain strongholds and boasted, “Who will bring me down?” Obadiah declares that God brings low all human pride: “The pride of your heart has deceived you.” No fortress is safe from the God who humbles the arrogant.

2. God Defends His People

God takes Edom’s mistreatment of Judah personally, treating violence against His people as a wrong done to Him. He sees every act done against His own and will vindicate them, showing His covenant faithfulness.

3. Retribution: Deeds Return on the Doer

“As you have done, it shall be done to you; your deeds shall return on your own head.” Obadiah states the moral order of God’s world: the measure we give will be measured back, and injustice recoils on the unjust.

4. The Day of the LORD Over All Nations

The judgment on Edom is a preview of the day of the LORD upon “all the nations.” God’s justice is not partial or local but universal; every proud people will give account before Him.

5. The Preservation of a Remnant

“But on Mount Zion there shall be those who escape.” Even in judgment God preserves a people for Himself, ensuring that His purposes and promises endure through a delivered remnant.

6. The Kingdom Belongs to the LORD

The book climaxes with the triumphant word, “and the kingdom shall be the LORD’s.” Above the rise and fall of every earthly power stands the everlasting kingdom of God, fulfilled in the reign of Christ.
