At Sinai, a year after leaving Egypt, Israel keeps the Passover as commanded. When some are unable to observe it because they are unclean from touching a dead body, God graciously provides a “second Passover” a month later for anyone unclean or away on a journey, so that none who desire to keep it are excluded. The chapter then describes the cloud that covers the tabernacle by day and looks like fire by night: whenever the cloud lifts, Israel sets out; whenever it settles, they encamp — “at the command of the LORD they camped, and at the command of the LORD they set out.”
The provision for a delayed Passover reveals the heart of a God who makes a way for the excluded to come near, anticipating the gospel’s welcome to the unclean and the outsider through the true Passover, Christ. The guiding cloud is the great picture of walking by faith: Israel’s movements are governed entirely by the visible presence of God, teaching them to trust His timing whether the cloud lingered for a day or a year. To live under the cloud is to surrender one’s own schedule to God’s guidance, following where He leads and waiting where He tarries — the wilderness school of trust that shapes the life of faith.
