Key Verses: Numbers 34:2, 34:13, 34:17
God defines the boundaries of the land Israel is to inherit — its southern border by the wilderness of Zin and the Dead Sea, its western border the Mediterranean, its northern and eastern borders marked by named landmarks — the whole of Canaan west of the Jordan, to be divided among the nine and a half tribes (the other two and a half having settled east of the Jordan). God appoints Eleazar the priest, Joshua, and a leader from each tribe to oversee the apportioning of the inheritance.
The careful mapping of the land underscores that the inheritance is a definite, God-given gift, not a vague hope: the LORD specifies exactly what He is granting to His people, down to its borders. That He describes the land before Israel has set foot in it testifies to His certainty that He will give it, so that the boundaries are drawn in faith on the strength of His promise. The appointment of leaders to divide the land fairly among the tribes shows God’s concern that each receive its rightful portion. The whole chapter keeps the promise vividly in view on the eve of its fulfillment, a foretaste of the sure inheritance “kept in heaven” for God’s people in Christ (1 Peter 1:4).
