Matthew related passages
Matthew shows Jesus fulfilling the Law, the Prophets, and the promises to David and Abraham.
Within the Bible
- Previous: Malachi closed the Old Testament promising the messenger who would prepare the Lord’s way; after four centuries, Matthew opens with John the Baptist and the coming of the King.
- Next: Mark presents the same Christ as the tireless Servant, on the move to the cross.
- Thematic Connections:
- Isaiah 7:14; 9:6-7 - The virgin’s son, Immanuel, and the coming Davidic King whom Matthew shows fulfilled in Jesus.
- Micah 5:2; Zechariah 9:9 - The birth in Bethlehem and the King on a donkey, cited in Matthew 2 and 21.
- Daniel 7:13-14 - The Son of Man given all authority and an everlasting kingdom, echoed in Matthew 28:18.
Cross-Testament Connections
Matthew shows Jesus as the fulfillment of the whole Old Testament:
- The son of David and Abraham: The King of the covenant promises, in whom all nations are blessed (Matthew 1:1; Genesis 12:3; 2 Samuel 7:12-16).
- Immanuel and the virgin birth: The fulfillment of Isaiah’s sign of “God with us” (Matthew 1:23; Isaiah 7:14).
- The new Moses: Jesus gives the true meaning of the law from the mountain and is the greater Prophet Moses foretold (Matthew 5-7; Deuteronomy 18:15).
- The ransom for many: Jesus’ death fulfills the suffering Servant who bears the sin of many (Matthew 20:28; Isaiah 53).
- The Son of Man’s authority: The risen Christ receives the everlasting dominion of Daniel’s vision (Matthew 28:18; Daniel 7:13-14).
