Full of the Spirit, Jesus overcomes the devil’s threefold temptation in the wilderness with Scripture. Returning to Galilee, He stands in the Nazareth synagogue, reads from Isaiah — “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me... to proclaim good news to the poor” — and declares it fulfilled in Himself, but is rejected by His hometown. He then teaches with authority in Capernaum, casts out an unclean spirit, heals Peter’s mother-in-law and many others, and insists He must preach the good news of the kingdom to other towns as well.
