Israel is oppressed by the Philistines for forty years. The angel of the LORD appears to the barren wife of Manoah, announcing a son who is to be a Nazirite from the womb and will begin to save Israel from the Philistines. When Manoah asks the angel’s name, it is “wonderful,” and the angel ascends in the altar flame; Samson is born and blessed by the LORD.
