Judges study chapter

Judges 11

c. 1085 BCJephthah delivers Israel from Ammon but binds himself with a rash and tragic vow concerning his daughter.

Jephthah, an outcast son driven out for his mother’s sake, is recalled by Gilead’s elders to lead against Ammon. After a failed appeal to history and justice, the Spirit of the LORD comes upon him; but he vows to sacrifice whatever comes first from his house if he wins. He triumphs, and to his grief it is his only daughter who comes out to meet him with dancing.
