Jude themes
Jude develops contending for the faith, certain judgment, building yourselves up, and God’s keeping.
1. Contending for the Faith
Believers must “contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.” The gospel is a fixed deposit to be defended against those who would corrupt it, requiring vigilance and courage from God’s people.
2. The Danger of False Teachers
Ungodly men had “crept in unnoticed,” perverting grace into sensuality and denying Christ’s lordship. Jude warns that such intruders are deceptive, immoral, and destructive, and must be recognized and resisted.
3. The Certainty of God’s Judgment
Through many examples — unbelieving Israel, fallen angels, Sodom, Cain, Balaam, Korah — Jude shows that God has always judged the ungodly, and the false teachers’ condemnation is likewise certain.
4. Building Yourselves Up in the Faith
Against the threat, believers are to “build yourselves up in your most holy faith,” pray in the Spirit, keep themselves in God’s love, and wait for Christ’s mercy — active perseverance that guards the soul.
5. Mercy Toward the Wavering
Even while warning sharply, Jude calls for mercy toward those affected by error: “have mercy on those who doubt,” “save others by snatching them out of the fire,” showing compassion mixed with holy caution.
6. God’s Power to Keep His People
The great doxology assures believers that God “is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory.” Ultimately, our security rests not in ourselves but in the keeping God.
