Key figures

The LORD

The divine warrior who goes before Israel, fights for them, and gives them the land He promised

The commander of the army of the LORD

The One who appears to Joshua with drawn sword and receives his worship on holy ground (5:13-15)

Joshua

Moses’ successor, who leads Israel across the Jordan and into the land, and calls them to serve the LORD

Caleb

Joshua’s fellow faithful spy, who at eighty-five claims Hebron, still “wholly following the LORD”

Rahab

The Canaanite of Jericho whose faith saves her household and brings her into the line of Christ

Achan

The Israelite whose hidden theft of devoted things brings defeat at Ai and judgment on himself

Eleazar the priest

Aaron’s son, who casts lots with Joshua to apportion the inheritance

The Gibeonites

The Canaanites who deceive Israel into a treaty and become servants at the sanctuary
