Their duty done, the eastern tribes return home and build a great altar by the Jordan. The western tribes, fearing apostasy, muster for war, but Phinehas leads a delegation to investigate. The eastern tribes explain that the altar is not for sacrifice but a witness for future generations that they too belong to the LORD, and war is averted.
