Important Concepts

• The Word Made Flesh: John proclaims Jesus as the eternal God who became truly human — fully divine, fully man.

Practical Application

John was written to be believed. Its whole design is to bring the reader face to face with Jesus — the eternal Word, the Lamb of God, the great “I AM” — and to press the question of faith: will you believe that this is the Christ, the Son of God? For John there is no neutral ground. Jesus is either the divine Son who gives eternal life or a blasphemer worthy of stoning; His signs either open our eyes or leave us in the darkness of unbelief. The Gospel therefore calls each of us to personal trust in Jesus, not mere admiration or agreement, but the believing that “receives” Him and so becomes a child of God. And it holds out the most precious promise imaginable to all who do: eternal life, the very life of God, beginning now and lasting forever.

For those who believe, John shapes the life of discipleship around two great words: abide and love. We are branches in the true vine, and our fruitfulness — indeed our whole spiritual life — depends on remaining in Christ, drawing everything from Him, for “apart from me you can do nothing.” And the mark by which the world will know we are His is love: “Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” John also assures us that we are not left alone; the same Jesus who returned to the Father sent the Helper, the Holy Spirit, to dwell in us, teach us, and testify to Christ. So John leaves the believer resting in the finished work of the One who said “It is finished,” abiding in Him, loving His people, and living the abundant, eternal life He came to give.
