The Setting of Joel

Joel’s setting is Judah and its heart, Jerusalem, with the temple (“the house of the LORD”) at the center of the action, for it is there that the priests are summoned to lament, the fast is proclaimed, and the people gather to cry out to God. The book’s imagery is agricultural, drawn from the ruined fields, vineyards, orchards, and pastures of the land after the locusts have passed — the grain destroyed, the vines withered, the animals groaning for want of pasture.

The horizon then widens. In the vision of the day of the LORD, the nations are gathered for judgment in “the Valley of Jehoshaphat,” also called “the Valley of Decision,” a symbolic place of God’s verdict on the peoples who oppressed His own. Enemy nations named include Tyre, Sidon, Philistia, Egypt, and Edom. But the final vista is Zion restored and secure, flowing with abundance and watered by a fountain from the house of the LORD, where God dwells with His people forever.

Timeline

• An uncertain date - Joel prophesies to Judah, possibly in the ninth century (c. 835 BC) or the post-exilic period (c. 500 BC).
• A locust plague - A devastating swarm strips the land, prompting the call to repentance.
• The day of the LORD - Announced as near, both in the immediate crisis and the ultimate judgment.
• Fulfilled at Pentecost (c. AD 33) - Joel’s promise of the outpoured Spirit is fulfilled through the risen Christ (Acts 2).
