Officials, enraged that Jeremiah keeps urging surrender, throw him into a muddy cistern to die, but the Cushite official Ebed-melech pleads for him and pulls him out with ropes and rags. Zedekiah again consults Jeremiah in secret, who urges him to surrender and live, but the fearful king lacks the courage to obey.
