Hosea related passages
Hosea’s redeeming love, ’out of Egypt,’ and ’not my people’ are all fulfilled in Christ.
Within the Bible
- Previous: Daniel closes the Major Prophets with visions of God’s sovereignty over the nations; Hosea opens the Minor Prophets, returning to the northern kingdom and God’s faithful love for an unfaithful people.
- Next: Joel calls Judah to repentance in view of the day of the LORD, sounding the same summons to “return to the LORD.”
- Thematic Connections:
- Amos - The contemporary prophet to the northern kingdom, emphasizing justice alongside Hosea’s emphasis on love.
- Ezekiel 16; 23 - Extended allegories of Israel as an unfaithful wife, echoing Hosea’s imagery.
- Ephesians 5:25-27 - Christ’s love for the church as His bride, fulfilling Hosea’s picture of redeeming love.
Cross-Testament Connections
Hosea’s love and promises are fulfilled in Christ:
- The redeeming Bridegroom: Hosea’s buying back of his unfaithful wife foreshadows Christ, who loved the church and gave Himself to redeem and cleanse her (Ephesians 5:25-27).
- Out of Egypt: “Out of Egypt I called my son” is applied to Jesus’ return from Egypt as a child (Hosea 11:1; Matthew 2:15).
- Mercy for the Gentiles: “Not My People” becoming “My People” is fulfilled in the inclusion of the Gentiles and all who believe (Hosea 2:23; Romans 9:25-26; 1 Peter 2:10).
- Mercy, not sacrifice: Jesus twice quotes Hosea 6:6 to defend His welcome of sinners and His compassion (Matthew 9:13; 12:7).
- Victory over death: Hosea’s hope of ransom from the grave anticipates the resurrection victory of Christ (Hosea 13:14; 1 Corinthians 15:55).
