The LORD tells Abram to leave his country, kindred, and father’s house for a land He’ll show. God promises to make him a great nation, bless him, make his name great, and make him a blessing. Those who bless Abram will be blessed; those who curse him will be cursed. In Abram all families of earth shall be blessed. Abram obeys at age 75, taking Sarai, Lot, possessions, and people from Haran. They journey to Canaan, passing through to Shechem’s oak of Moreh. Canaanites are in the land. The LORD appears, promising to give this land to Abram’s offspring. Abram builds an altar there, then moves to the hill country east of Bethel, building another altar and calling on the LORD’s name. Famine drives Abram to Egypt. Fearing Pharaoh will kill him to take beautiful Sarai, Abram asks her to claim she’s his sister. Pharaoh takes her, treating Abram well for her sake. The LORD afflicts Pharaoh’s house with plagues. Pharaoh confronts Abram, returns Sarai, and sends them away with all they have.
The Abrahamic covenant is foundational to all Scripture-blessing, land, nation, and universal blessing through his seed (fulfilled in Christ, Galatians 3:16). God initiates, Abram obeys by faith (Hebrews 11:8). Abram’s response-altar building and worship-shows proper priorities. Yet immediately Abram’s faith falters in Egypt, using deception to protect himself, endangering God’s promises. God must intervene to preserve His plan despite Abram’s failure. Pharaoh, a pagan, acts more righteously than Abram. This pattern repeats-God’s faithfulness overcomes human weakness. The half-truth (Sarai is Abram’s half-sister) doesn’t justify deception. Foreshadows Israel’s later descent to Egypt and Exodus deliverance.
