Within the Bible

• Previous: Second Chronicles ends with the decree of Cyrus, the very event that opens Ezra. The two books join to carry the story from exile to return.
• Next: Nehemiah continues the restoration a generation later, rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls and, with Ezra, renewing the covenant and reforming the community.
• Thematic Connections:
  • Haggai and Zechariah - The prophets whose preaching (recorded in their books) stirred the rebuilding of the temple in Ezra 5-6.
  • Jeremiah 25:11-12; 29:10 - The prophecy of seventy years of exile that the return fulfills.

Ezra’s restoration points forward to Christ:

• The greater return: The homecoming from Babylon foreshadows Christ gathering His people out of the exile of sin into the household of God (Ephesians 2:12-22).
• The second temple: The temple rebuilt in Ezra is the one Jesus would teach in and cleanse, and He is the greater temple to which it points (Matthew 12:6; John 2:19-21).
• God over the kings: The LORD’s rule over Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes anticipates the reign of Christ, “the ruler of kings on earth” (Revelation 1:5).
• The centrality of Scripture: Ezra’s devotion to the Word models the ministry that exalts the Scriptures which testify of Jesus (John 5:39; 2 Timothy 3:15).
• A separated, holy people: The call to separation anticipates the church, called out to be holy and distinct for God (2 Corinthians 6:17; 1 Peter 2:9).
