Ezra gathers those who will return with him and, finding no Levites at first, sends for ministers for the house of God. Ashamed to ask the king for soldiers, having testified that “the hand of our God is for good on all who seek him,” he proclaims a fast to seek God’s protection for the dangerous journey with its precious cargo. God answers, they arrive safely in Jerusalem, deliver the temple treasures, and offer sacrifices.
