The chapter records the register of those who returned with Zerubbabel and Jeshua — the families, the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants — nearly fifty thousand in all, along with their animals. Some could not prove their genealogy and were kept from the priesthood until a priest with the Urim and Thummim should arise. The returnees settle in their towns and give freely for the house of God.
