Ezekiel’s glory, Good Shepherd, new heart, and river of life are all fulfilled in Christ.
Within the Bible
- Previous: Lamentations mourns the fall of Jerusalem; Ezekiel, prophesying among the exiles, interprets that judgment and points beyond it to a new heart, resurrection, and God’s returning glory.
- Next: Daniel, a contemporary in the Babylonian court, complements Ezekiel with visions of God’s sovereignty over the nations and the coming kingdom.
- Thematic Connections:
- Jeremiah 31 - The companion promise of the new covenant, echoed in Ezekiel’s new heart and new spirit.
- John 10 - Jesus as the Good Shepherd, fulfilling Ezekiel 34.
- Revelation 21-22 - The new Jerusalem, the returning glory, and the river of life, fulfilling Ezekiel’s closing visions.
Cross-Testament Connections
Ezekiel’s visions and promises are fulfilled in Christ:
- The Son of Man: Ezekiel’s title foreshadows Jesus, “the Son of Man,” the truly human and divine One (Ezekiel 2:1; Mark 14:62).
- The glory of God: The departing and returning glory points to Christ, the glory of God who tabernacled among us (Ezekiel 43:2-5; John 1:14).
- The Good Shepherd: “My servant David” who shepherds the flock is fulfilled in Jesus, who lays down His life for the sheep (Ezekiel 34:23; John 10:11).
- The new heart and Spirit: God’s promise of regeneration is fulfilled in the new birth by the Spirit that Christ brings (Ezekiel 36:26-27; John 3:5-8).
- The river of life: The life-giving river from the temple points to Christ’s living water and the river from the throne of God and the Lamb (Ezekiel 47:9; John 7:38; Revelation 22:1-2).
