Moses assembles the whole congregation of Israel to deliver the LORD’s commands, beginning with the Sabbath: six days for work, but the seventh a holy day of solemn rest, with no fire kindled in their dwellings on the Sabbath. He then invites the people to bring a freewill offering to the LORD for the tabernacle-gold, silver, bronze, colored yarns, fine linen, goat hair, skins, wood, oil, spices, and precious stones-whoever is of a generous heart. He calls for every skillful person to come and make all that the LORD has commanded: the tent and its coverings, the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the hangings, and the priestly garments. The people respond with overflowing generosity; everyone whose heart stirred him and whose spirit moved him comes and brings the LORD’s contribution, men and women alike, bringing brooches, earrings, rings, and gold objects, along with spun yarn and precious materials. Moses announces that the LORD has called Bezalel by name and filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, intelligence, and knowledge in all craftsmanship, and has appointed Oholiab with him, giving them ability to teach others. The chapter overflows with willing, Spirit-enabled devotion.
After the apostasy of the golden calf, this chapter shines with the beauty of restored, wholehearted worship, as the same gold that was given to make an idol is now given freely to build God’s dwelling. The repeated emphasis on the willing heart and the stirred spirit teaches that God delights in cheerful, voluntary giving rather than grudging obligation (2 Corinthians 9:7). The Spirit-filling of Bezalel and Oholiab shows that all fruitful service to God flows from His enabling grace, and their gift for teaching reminds us that God equips His people to build one another up. The inclusion of both men and women, each contributing according to their skill and generosity, prefigures the church where every member has a part in building the dwelling place of God. This freewill offering stands as an enduring pattern of gospel-shaped generosity, given in response to grace received. What was surrendered in rebellion is now consecrated in worship.
