The LORD commands Israel to depart from Sinai toward the promised land flowing with milk and honey, but He warns that He will not go up among them, lest He consume this stiff-necked people on the way; He will send an angel instead. This word of judgment strikes the people as disastrous news, and they mourn and strip off their ornaments. Moses pitches the tent of meeting outside the camp, and there the LORD speaks with him face to face, as a man speaks to his friend, while the pillar of cloud descends and the people worship at their tent doors. Moses presses the LORD, refusing to move without His presence: “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here,” and he pleads that God’s presence is what distinguishes Israel from every other people. The LORD answers, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest,” and affirms that Moses has found favor in His sight. Emboldened, Moses asks to see God’s glory; the LORD promises to make all His goodness pass before him and to proclaim His name, but He warns that no one can see His face and live. So God places Moses in a cleft of the rock, covers him with His hand as His glory passes, and lets Moses see His back but not His face.
At the heart of this chapter is the deepest question of the redeemed life: better the wilderness with God’s presence than the promised land without it, for communion with God is the true treasure of salvation. Moses’ bold intercession reveals a friendship with God that anticipates the access believers now have through Christ, in whom we behold the glory of God (2 Corinthians 4:6). The impossibility of seeing God’s face and living exposes the gulf between the holy God and sinful man, a gulf bridged only when the Word became flesh and we beheld His glory (John 1:14). The cleft of the rock, where Moses is shielded by God’s own hand, beautifully pictures the sinner sheltered in Christ, the Rock, from the consuming holiness of God. God’s promise of rest points beyond Canaan to the eternal rest of His people. Here we learn to pray as Moses did, valuing God Himself above every gift He gives.
